ROSA Update - May 27, 1999
<-Previous Next

The public hearing on the proposed changes in the zoning regulations affecting the Bennetts Ponds property has been postponed from June 1 to JUNE 8. The hearing, which will be held at the Cleves Auditorium at Veteran's Park School, will begin at 8:00 p.m.and end at 11:00 p.m. The P&Z has indicated that the hearing will be continued to future dates as needed.

The postponement is a result of ROSA's discovery of technical errors made by Eureka's representatives and by the town. Our attorney, Frank Cochran, brought these errors to Ozzie's attention, and the decision was made by Eureka's attorneys to request a postponement.

As a result, we ask that those of you who did not yet write a letter to the Editor of the Ridgefield Press do so for next week's edition (the deadline will be Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. due to the Memorial Day holiday.) Letters can be faxed to 438-6014, or emailed to newsroom@acorn-online.com. If you don't have a letter in today's paper, please write a short letter for the June 3 paper opposing Eureka's petition to change our zoning regulations to allow conference centers & accessory uses (lodging, restaurants, etc), townhouse condominiums, single-family homes, golf courses, swimming pools, tennis courts, etc. in the CDD (Corporate Development District) zone. Mack Reid indicated that they generally won't publish letters from the same people on the same subject two weeks in a row, so we need others to write next week.

As I mentioned in my previous email, some of the reasons for opposition (in addition to the obvious goal of preservation of the entire property as open space) include traffic on Route 7, Route 35, and secondary roads in Ridgefield, limited sewage capacity/concern for the Norwalk River, school overcrowding, impact on the watershed of the Saugatuck River, negative impact of construction and maintenance (fertilizers, pesticide) of golf courses.

Thank you for the great response to my request on Monday - there were 13 letters on Bennetts Ponds in the paper this week. We must keep up the momentum and the pressure, so please write!

On a final, upbeat note - the proposed development of Bennetts Ponds, and our efforts to oppose it are the subject of a cover story article written by Ridgefield's own Jennifer Ponte Canning in this week's edition of the "Fairfield County Weekly". This is a free paper which can be found at Steve's Bagels, Anconas (and probably other places in town where I don't shop). It is a very well written, thoroughly researched article which covers all of the issues as well as some of the history of the sale of the property to Eureka/Milstein. Please try and pick up a copy of the May 27 edition this weekend, or read it on line at:

Thanks!
