The Ridgefield Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing on the future of the Bennett's Pond property this Wednesday evening, April 11th. The purpose of the public hearing is to enable the public to express their views on the Selectmen's resolution in support of the acquisition of the entire 613 acres by negotiated purchase or eminent domain. When this resolution was re-voted last Wednesday (following a technical problem with the vote on March 28), it passed 4 -1, with only Joseph Heyman opposed.
Under the proposed resolution, the land would be acquired by the town for open space, recreation and other municipal purposes. Once the public hearing is completed, a date for a Town Meeting will be set. At the Town meeting, a vote will be taken as to whether or not to proceed with the acquisition, and if so, to set the date for a town-wide referendum. The Selectmen's resolution has also been referred to the Ridgefield Planning & Zoning Commission (as required by state law under CGS 8-24), which will consider the referral this week.
PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND THIS IMPORTANT PUBLIC HEARING AND SPEAK OUT IN FAVOR OF ACQUISITION BY EMINENT DOMAIN! This hearing is the culmination of nearly 2 1/2 years of work by many, many ROSA supporters. There will, no doubt, be opponents to the proposed purchase speaking on Wednesday night. The voices of those who support open space preservation in our community must be heard on Wednesday night. Please come and express your support for the preservation of the Bennett's Pond property!
