Current Goal of
Ridgefield Open Space Association, Inc.
(ROSA)

ROSA's immediate goal is the preservation of the 680-acre property known as "Bennetts Ponds". The land, which is the only remaining significant undeveloped property in Ridgefield, Connecticut, is now threatened by a proposed mixed-use development including condominiums, single-family homes, a hotel/conference center, office buildings, and an 18-hole private golf course.

The land is environmentally significant due to its size, proximity to existing town and state open space, vast areas of wetlands and watercourses, and presence in a public water suppy watershed.

ROSA Planned Activities

  • Present legal and environmental arguments before state and town regulatory agencies to prevent changes in our zoning regulations required for the development of the property as a mixed-use project. The developer's proposal is contrary to the land's current zoning.

  • Educate the public in Ridgefield and the surrounding area regarding the importance of the preservation of open space, and encourage their participation in the effort to preserve the Bennetts Ponds property.

  • Encourage the state and town to negotiate an equitable purchase price on the property from the current owners.

  • Participate in the development of Ridgefield's Plan of Conservation & Development.

  • Propose and encourage the enactmant of changes in Ridgefield's zoning and wetlands regulations and town ordinances to improve their ability to protect the natural environment of Ridgefield.

  • Identify other significant open space properties for future acquisition and preservation, in conjunction with the efforts of the Ridgefield Conservation Commission and the Ridgefield Land Conservancy.

  • Investigate open space funding opportunities available from federal, state and private sources.

  • Propose and support bonding and other initiatives at the town and state level to be used for the acquisition of open space properties.
